Training

The Police Department places high value on the training of our sworn officers and civilian employees to maintain a superior level of competency in serving the residents of the Town of Parker.

Sworn Officers

Police Officers must be certified by the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board prior to date of hire. For further information on POST certification, please visit the Colorado Office of the Attorney General. Once hired, a new officer's training will include classroom learning, as well as on-the-job training. The department uses the Police Training Officer (PTO) program. This extensive program provides the officer with a foundation for life-long learning that prepares him/her for the complexities of policing for today and in the future. Recruits are under the constant supervision of a PTO for a minimum of 16 weeks until successful completion of the training program.

To sustain an officer's skill level and prepare them for the unpredictable environment in which he/she works, a commissioned officer attends training annually. In 2020, Parker Police Officers averaged 93 hours of training. This training includes defensive tactics, driving, emergency medical treatment, firearms, and technology updates. Additionally, officers and detectives have the opportunity to attend various other trainings to develop their skills for specialized disciplines and assignments.

Civilian Employees

Civilian employees receive initial on-the-job training specific to the particular position for which they were hired. These areas include emergency 9-1-1 communications, records management, evidence collection and management, customer service, administrative services, victim assistance, and professional standards. The Parker Police Department supports continued training and education to increase knowledge and expertise in communication skills, crisis intervention, technology updates, and various other disciplines pertaining to their respective positions.
